Rode K2

Large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone with continuously adjustable directional characteristic

The goal in developing the K2 was to bring a microphone with a typical vintage character to the market that is also technically state-of-the-art. For example, RØDE's gold-coated 1" HF1 capsule, in conjunction with audiophile Class A circuitry, enables a sensationally low self-noise level of only 10 dBA for tube microphones. In addition, the K2 is an extremely robust and perfectly manufactured microphone weighing in at a whopping 815 g, with a noble satin finish on the outside. The K2 is manufactured at RØDE in predominantly automated processes, which means you benefit from exemplary precision workmanship.

The K2 offers you a full and uniquely silky vocal sound, which asserts itself effortlessly in the mix. The desired directional characteristic can be continuously adjusted at the power supply unit from omnidirectional to cardioid to figure-eight, allowing for numerous sonic variations depending on the recording situation and room. Of course, the K2 is also perfectly suited for acoustic guitars, guitar amps and many other instruments. Thanks to the high output level, the downstream microphone preamp can be adjusted back to a pleasantly low gain value, and this is always interesting, unless it is a hi-end channel strip.

In order to achieve the best possible transmission quality and consistency, RØDE selects the tubes used itself and leaves nothing to chance here. The criteria are low noise, sound and reliability. RØDE obtains the double triode model "6922" used in the K2 in relatively large quantities as a low-cost, because not selected, variant and then subjects these tubes to a meticulous test: first a 24-hour "burn-in", followed by precise measurements of noise and microphony. Finally, it is checked how precisely further technical data correspond to the default circuit design of the K2. Tubes that do not meet these requirements are mercilessly rejected, i.e. thrown away; on average at least 20%.

The tubes recently used by RØDE are extremely durable; if the microphone is handled with care, it will last 10 years without tube replacement. Just like with full-tube amps, you should avoid mechanical stress after use and in case of doubt it is always better to leave the microphone on for the whole session than to switch it on and off frequently. If necessary, you can easily obtain a selected original replacement tube from your dealer - and at a fair price.

The K2 is supplied in an ABS molded case including microphone holder RM2, elastic mount SM2, power supply unit and a 10 m connection cable. The K2 is manufactured by RØDE in Australia. Registered users receive a 10 year warranty.
