RME HDSPe AES
The HDSPe AES is a short length PCI Express card with AES/EBU interfaces. It provides eight AES/EBU inputs (16 channels) and eight outputs (16 channels) at 192 kHz. The equipment is completed by two MIDI I/O ports, word clock I/O, and the optionally available TCO module for synchronization to LTC and video.
The HDSPe AES is RME's response to requests from professional users for an AES-based solution in typical RME quality and with typical RME features - the optimal complete solution for professional users in radio, television, theatre, stage/PA - and of course in professional studios.
On the motherboard there is word clock I/O and a 25-pin D-Sub connector which provides 4 AES/EBU inputs (XLR-F) and 4 AES outputs (XLR-M) via standard digital breakout cable (Tascam pin assignment). The word clock input is galvanically isolated with a transformer and processes single, double or quad-speed signals fully automatically. The motherboard is already fully functional as an 8-channel I/O solution. On the separate expansion board there is a second D-Sub connector for the channels 9 to 16, as well as the connector for the MIDI breakout cable, which has 2 complete MIDI inputs and outputs (4 DIN sockets). The expansion board only needs a free slot on the case, but no PCI Express slot.
Thanks to the DSP-based TotalMix mixer, all 16 inputs and 16 playback channels can be freely routed and mixed to all 16 physical outputs. The AES-32 thus offers exceptional monitoring capabilities. Up to 8 completely independent stereo submixes are possible.
Copy/paste routings, ganging and group-based fader work, and the exceptional Matrix window turn HDSPe AES into a powerful and easy-to-use redistributor, patchbay, router, converter, and splitter. The hardware mixer is completely remote controllable via MIDI. In addition, the hardware calculates RMS and peak level meters for all 48 audio channels with hardly measurable CPU load.
The well-known Time Code Option (TCO) of the Hammerfall DSP series for synchronization to LTC and video can also be used with the HDSPe AES. Thanks to SteadyClock(TM), the map not only extracts absolute position information from these signals, but also a very low jitter word clock.
RME uses a configuration memory for the most important settings of the card. Instead of operating in a default mode from powering on the computer to loading the driver, the HDSPe AES immediately activates the last used sample rate, master/slave configuration and AES format. This eliminates interference noise and problems in the clock network, even when the computer is switched on or rebooted.
An external breakout box in 19" inch format is available as an option, with an innovative design that makes its XLR connectors available in the front or rear of the rack. BOB-32 has D-Sub connectors with Tascam and Yamaha pin assignment, and can therefore also be used with other devices as a digital rack breakout box.
After a click on the hammer symbol in the systray of the task bar, the configuration dialog of the HDSPe AES appears. The clear, well-arranged structure and the unique, informative status windows for input signal, clock modes and sample rate make working with the card a pure pleasure.
With several digital inputs, it is particularly important to be informed not only about the lock states, but also about the synchronicity of the signals. RME's exclusive SyncCheck ® checks all inputs and outputs the result in plain text, and thanks to Intelligent Clock Control (ICC) you always have clock settings and synchronization under control.
HDSPe AES is equipped with SteadyClock(TM), RME's unique sync clock technology. SteadyClock refreshes clock signals, removes jitter, and ensures optimum AD/DA conversion at all times for sensational sound quality, regardless of the quality of the reference clock used.
Thanks to SteadyClock, the HDSPe AES can freely determine its own sample rate. The DDS dialog allows a direct selection of the most common sample rates for audio and video. In addition, the sample rate can be changed completely freely and in real time using two sliders in the +/- 4% range.
Up to 3 HDSPe AES or other cards of the HDSP series can be used simultaneously - in any combination.
