ALT-436C is a software recreation of a late-1950s single-channel vari-mu compressor, loved by pop producers for its ability to enhance vocals and bass guitars.

The analogue components and vari-mu design of the original were precisely measured, captured and recreated natively, resulting in a very musical and distinctive sound. ALT-436C makes bass guitars and vocals stand out in the mix, but also adds its warm all-tube polish to brass, strings or synth tracks, and on the mix bus it provides just enough glue for a tight, cohesive mix without too much vintage colour. It is modelled on the third revision of the 436, which introduced the Threshold and Release Time controls – a unit from the Beatles era whose design and sound later inspired iconic vari-mu compressors such as the Fairchild.
