A virtual instrument featuring percussion, marimbas, modular synths and drum machines re-amped through the towering Picó sound systems of Barranquilla on Colombia’s Caribbean coast.

It began at La Hacienda Creative’s studio in Quebec with recordings of hollow-bodied wooden drums, marimbas, hand-played African percussion, hand-built modular lines and electric plucked strings, while a classic 808, a LinnDrum and vintage analogue boxes were driven past the red and resampled with Montréal-based Yulian Pugachevsky. In Barranquilla every sound was then re-amped through hand-built Picó stacks painted like mythical beasts, letting air, concrete walls and sheer volume shape it, complemented by live sessions with the Cali-based modular workshop Circuito Sonoro Lab. In MNDALA 2 these become playable instruments with real-time modulation, and all 240 sample maps use Sample Start Modulation (SSM). El Jaguar is the fourth instalment in MNTRA’s Portals series and expands your palette with sounds and processes rarely accessible outside their source.
